Higher Education in Bulgaria

Higher Education in Bulgaria attract  international students  due  to its excellent quality; diploma recognised in EU/EEA and beyond; admission on application files selection; reasonable tuition fees and living expenses; programs in English, French, Germany and Bulgarian; possibility of transfer from other university, etc.

Higher Education in Bulgaria also referred to as tertiary education or post-secondary education, is the educational level following the completion of a school providing a secondary education.  Students who receive the Diploma of Secondary/Secondary Specialized Education are entitled to apply for admission to a higher education course. To gain admission to a university or college of higher education, the student must also pass the entrance examinations. The academic year comprises two terms. It starts in September or October and ends in May or June.|

International students choose Bulgaria because of the very good quality of education together with relatively inexpensive costs of studies and living. In the wide variety of public and private schools courses intended to prepare students for rapid advancement into high and responsible positions as executives are offered. Lectures are interest – driven; there are extra curriculum activities which allow students to deal with things that bring them pleasure; they work in considerably smaller groups, thus supporting understanding; tutoring is a common practice and it serves to develop and improve professional inclinations.

For international students, it has been introduced in Bulgarian Higher Education   so called Preparatory course (in English for father study in English, in Bulgarian for further study in Bulgarian). The Higher Education system is generally based on Bachelor (License) – Master – Doctor system (LMD) and is provided through three types of institutions – universities, specialized higher schools and colleges.
The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) has    been adopted under the necessary legislation (Higher Education Act) and it is implemented since 2004.

Institutions of Higher Education in Bulgaria are autonomous. They are responsible for programme design and quality assurance of the education provided. In all institutions a quality management system for internal monitoring and evaluation is introduced due to legislation requirements. The external monitoring and evaluation is under responsibilities of the Nation-al Agency for Evaluation and Accreditation.

The higher education in Bulgaria provides applicants with the following degrees options:

  • College degree – obtained after three years of studies;
  • Bachelor’s degree – obtained after three to four years of studies;
  • Master’s degree – obtained after five years of studies (or after one to one  year year and half  for Bachelor applicants);
  • PhD or Doctorate degree– obtained after three years of studies, only available for applicants with a Master’s degree;

Higher Education in Bulgaria is highly appreciated on international level. As a simple example, thousand of Bulgarian medical Doctors are working in Uk, Canada, France, Germany and all over world. Almost all university have full Bulgarian accreditation. Some of them have double accreditation (national and American, French, Uk, Holland etc.).

Bulgaria being the European Union (EU) member, the degrees obtained in Bulgarian Higher Education institutions are full recognised in all EE state members and beyond.
