Student loans

A Student loan in Europe is designed to help students pay for university study tuition, books, and living expenses. It may differ from other types of loans in that the interest rate may be substantially lower and the repayment schedule may be deferred while the student is still in school.

University tuition fees in Europe vary considerably. While in some EU countries admission to higher education is free, in others universities can be rather expensive. Financial support in the form of student loans, student scholarships student grants also depends on different criteria.

Student loans abroad in Europe
Student loans abroad in Europe for European students are available in most EU/EEA countries and they are open to students from all EU/EEA countries.

As an example of student loan available in EU/EEA for European students from others states,

  • Bulgarian student loans for European students cover the full cost of tuition and dependents (children born or adopted being student). At the same time, student scholarships are available to EU students on the same basis as they are to home students, although these are based on both merit and means-testing;
  • Netherland student loans cover the full cost of tuition and non-repayable;
  • Italian student loans are available to EU students on the same basis as they are to home students, although these are based on both merit and means-testing;

 

European Union rules state that students from other member states are entitled to access universities for the same tuition fees as domestic students, but countries are not obliged to provide financial assistance on the same basis unless individuals have been living in the country for at least five years prior to beginning study.
Foreign students, who are already residents, even if they are not a national of the country and where they want to study, if they have been living there for five years or more, are entitled to maintenance grant on the same conditions as nationals of that country.

Bulgarian loans for European students are available for undergraduate (Bachelor), graduate (Master) and postgraduate (Doctorate) programs at the accredited state or private institution and for all fields of study: medical (medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, public health management, etc.), technical (mechanic, telecommunication, computer sciences, electricity, etc.), economic (business administration, finance, statistics, accountancy, etc.), social, political sciences etc.
